    Program Overview

    NOVUS DAY promotes academic achievement, social/emotional well-being, and personal growth by utilizing therapeutic, educational, family, and community connections. We serve children and adolescents who, due to one or more of the following special education classifications, require additional support within the academic environment:
    • Emotional Disability
    • Specific Learning Disability
    • Speech-Language Impairment
    • Other Health Impairment
    NOVUS DAY provide services to children and adolescents who struggle with emotional, behavioral, and intellectual disabilities by
    • Utilizing multiple programs and spaces to enhance reading, writing, and math skills.
    • Improving executive functioning skills, and job and career readiness training.
    • Utilizing educational, therapeutic, family, and community connections to promote academic achievement, social/emotional well-being, and personal growth.
    NOVUS DAY provides the the following related services:

  • Dr. Mark Cohen - Principal

    Dr. Cohen has deep experience in special education and school administration. He has his ISBE administrative certification (formerly Type 75) and his Illinois teaching certification. Dr. Cohen received his Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership from National Louis University, his Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from Concordia University and his Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from Lincoln University. Dr. Cohen is an exprerienced school principal, assistant principal, case manager, interventionalist, and teacher. Dr Cohen is REACH certified, CPI certified, and has past experience as a supervisor of SECA and paraprofessionals, case manager, interventionalist (Tutor Corp Supervisor/Branching Minds), culture and culture team leader, and parent action committee leader.

    Alison Jordan - Lead Teacher

    Alison Jordan is and expereinced teacher and her Professional Educator's License (LBS1). Ms. Jordan bachelors degree from Illinois State University and her masters degreee in teaching and learning from Capella University. Ms. Jordan has over five years of experience as a teacher and case manager in therapeutic day school, working with studuent populations similar to the Novus students.

    Eric Carlton - Educational Director

    Eric Carlton has over 30 years of experience in the education arena. He served as a special education teacher, assistant/associate principal, and principal of a large public high school. Eric later became a regional vice president of a national educational services company. In 2003, he started Banner to open and operate alternative and therapeutic day programs. Eric earned his Bachelor of Arts in African Studies from the University of Maryland Baltimore County, Masters of Science in Special Education from Johns Hopkins University, and Education Specialist Degree from Walden University. He is certified in Administration, Special Education and Instructional Leadership and belongs to numerous associations. Eric has received significant accolades, including the AdvancED Illinois Leadership Award and Excellence in Education Award, the Maryland Governor’s Citation for Excellence in Instructional Leadership, the Baltimore Mayor’s Community Partnership Award and UMBC’s Alumni of the Year Award. He is involved with several nonprofit boards and has worked with AdvancED for the past twelve years, serving as a lead evaluator and as the chairperson of its Illinois Performance Management Group. Over the past 30 years, Eric has been instrumental in improving the lives of thousands of disadvantaged students.

    Corey Shannon - Director of Student Services

    Corey Shannon has over 30 years of experience in the education and social service arenas. In the education sector, he served as a special education teacher, assistant/associate principal, and principal of several large therapeutic and alternative schools in Chicago. Corey served as a regional trainer of trainers in school climate and classroom management until he transitioned to DCFS in 2017. At DCFS, he developed relationships with hundreds of businesses across Illinois to provide youth in care with employment opportunities. In addition, he has ensured that youth receive training and support to obtain and sustain employment and to positively transform their lives. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Marketing from Lincoln University, Master of Arts in Education from American International University, and Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Concordia University. Corey belongs to numerous associations and has received significant accolades, including the Banner Learning Leadership Award (2016), Banner Learning Excellence in Education Award (2013), and Austin Community Citation of Dedication of Vision in Building a Stronger School and Community. As an Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. member, he sits on the fraternity’s Student Scholarship Committee. Corey trains in the areas of CPI, socio-emotional interventions, and restorative practices. Over his career, Corey has been able to educate and improve the lives of thousands of students.

    Barry Cohen - Director of Business Services

    Barry Cohen has more than 18 years of experience in the educational innovation arena, and a diverse background in accounting, law, and business. He received his Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from Bentley University and his Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland School of Law. Upon graduation from law school, Barry represented businesses for over a decade at large Baltimore law firms. In 2003, he left the private practice of law to become an entrepreneur in the education field, opening and operating alternative and therapeutic schools, and developing innovative curricula. He has developed effective business structures and streamlined administrative work both for his companies and as a consultant to other companies. He has opened numerous schools and educational programs with a focus on changing the landscape of urban education for the most disadvantaged and disengaged students. Through these programs, thousands of students have been educated, have received their degrees, and have achieved post-secondary success. Barry is also active in his community and sits on the boards of several nonprofit organizations.
